PhD Studentship
Fabricating Stable Biocatalyst Networks for the Manufacture of Fine Chemicals.
University of Manchester – School of Chemical Engineering & Analytical Science
A 3.5 year PhD studentship is available from October 2011 in the group led by Dr Aline Miller studying the fabrication of robust and reversible enzyme networks for use within novel microreactors. The project will primarily involve characterising and controlling the self-assembly pathway of enzyme functionalised peptides within peptide rich networks to generate a stable multiple enzyme network. Such networks will subsequently be tested for their ability to undertake cascadable chemical reactions before developing methods to incorporate the networks within a novel microreactor via triggered self-assembly for the controlled synthesis and delivery of model fine chemicals. The project is highly interdisciplinary and will involve material synthesis, characterisation and device fabrication. The project will be based in the Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre and will be co-supervised by Professor Nigel Scrutton, a world leader in enzyme catalysis.
Applicants should have (or be about to receive) an honours degree (at least II.1 or equivalent) in chemical engineering, chemistry, physics, biochemistry, or other relevant discipline, and should ideally have experience with material characterization.
Please see the Polymers and Peptides Research group website for more details http://www.polymersandpeptides.co.uk
