Graduate Training in the MIB
The MIB offers one of the few graduate training environments in the world that is dedicated to new-era quantitative bioscience. Our unique community of researchers provides an immense range of experience, stretching across the physical sciences, engineering, computation, maths and biology. We are fully committed to providing tomorrow’s quantitative molecular bioscientists with the broad range of skills they need in order to be successful in burgeoning fields such as systems biology, synthetic biology, nanoscale bioengineering, biocatalysis, biomolecular mechanistic studies and technology development. As you will see from the other pages on this website, the MIB is specifically designed to support and promote multi- and inter-disciplinary research activities, and is optimally equipped with state-of-the-art facilities.
We currently provide PhD training via two routes
Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) Studentships
The University of Manchester is one of the largest and most successful centres for biological and biotechnological focussed research and training in Europe. Researchers span the Faculties of Engineering and Physical Sciences, Life Sciences and Medical and Human Sciences and receive more BBSRC funding than any other university in the UK.
The BBSRC is in the process of establishing 10-15 Doctoral Training Partnerships across the UK to provide PhD training in areas of strategic relevance to the BBSRC. The University of Manchester has submitted a bid for DTP status and, if successful, we anticipate appointing around 25-40 PhD students to start in September 2012. The DTP scheme will provide students with excellent cross-disciplinary research training in line with the current BBSRC strategy for research support and training.
Fully-funded studentships available from Sept 2012. A wide range of multidisciplinary projects offering first class PhD training for the most outstanding applicants.

We are now accepting online applications for our 2012 Studentships. These fully-funded studentships are available in a range of academic disciplines, commencing in September 2012. The studentships provide funding for fees and stipend at the Research Council UK rate (eligible UK/EU applicants, see Eligibility).
Projects will be supervised by an inter-disciplinary team of academic staff.
