Welcome to our Advanced Lecture Course

Bioscience is changing rapidly, becoming more quantitative and predictive in nature, with increasing inputs from the physical sciences, engineering, computation and mathematics. At the core of this wave of change is the development of new technology and biophysical methods, spanning nanotechnology, structural analysis, chemical biology, computational biology and analytical science. The changing nature of bioscience is reflected in the rapid growth of fields such as systems and synthetic biology, which are based on precise analytical approaches as well as rigorous design and modelling.

Given these exciting prospects and developments, this Advanced Lecture Course is aimed at young researchers already working in related areas, as well as to those wishing to reorientate their research careers. The course will comprise a balanced combination of lectures, tutorials, structured discussion groups and poster sessions, which will provide training in many key areas. These will include: analysis of biomolecular structure and function, bioinformatics, state-of-the-art techniques for studying transcriptomes, proteomes and metabolomes, bioimaging, quantitative analysis of complex biomolecular complexes and pathways, modelling of molecules and systems, rate control analysis, nanotechnology, chemical biology and synthetic biology. The course will be held on the beautiful island of Spetses, an informal setting, allowing ample time for scientific discussion and interaction between participants and lecturers.

   Invited faculty include:
  • Jean Beggs (Edinburgh)
  • Virginia Cornish (Columbia)
  • Terence Hwa (UCSD)
  • Alfonso Jaramillo (Paris)
  • Kai Johnsson (Lausanne)
