Biofuels Cluster

Welcome to our website which contains details of the role we are playing in the CSIRO Energy Transformed Cluster on Biofuels. Funded by CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, our specific project within the consortium is focusing on Enzymatic Pathways for the Deconstruction of Lignin. The work is being carried out in the new Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre (MIB) which houses the Centre of Excellence in Biocatalysis, Biotransformation and Biocatalytic Manufacture (CoEBio3). Together with my colleagues Dr. Emma Fellows and Dr. Mark Corbett, our aim is to develop new technologies and processes for the depolymerisation of lignin using enzyme catalysts (biocatalysts). The approach we are taking involves a combination of microbial screening together with protein engineering and directed evolution in order to develop biocatalysts with the required activity for processing lignin.
