Michael Barber Centre for Mass Spectrometry

The Michael Barber Centre for Mass Spectrometry researches the development of mass spectrometry and related analytical techniques, and their application to problems of biological importance.

The Centre is particularly concerned with the understanding of the gas-phase ion chemistry of biomolecules (notably peptides and proteins) and the exploitation of that understanding in enhanced analytical approaches. Much of his current effort is devoted to proteomics (the definition of the protein complement of cells and organisms), with particular reference to quantitative determinations.

The Centre is the lead partner in a newly funded consortium (funded by the EPSRC) that aims to develop new analytical approaches to the characterisation and quantification of the proteome.
