Electron Microscopy Facility
Equipment Background :
The MIB EM facility is equipped with a Joel 1220 TEM transmission electron microscope coupled to a high resolution GATAN ORIUS CCD camera capable of recording high magnification digital images at ~ 3 angstrom / pixel resolution. The equipment is primarily geared up for recording data from samples prepared using negative or positive staining techniques and does not have the capability to record under cryo conditions.
In addition to the microscope, the suite has a carbon coater / glow discharging unit for sample preparation and has a high resolution EPSON scanner for the digitisation of ‘old’ film micrographs.
The MIB suite equipment and expertise is geared up towards:
- Single particle analysis of macromolecular complexes
- 2-D crystallographic analysis of membrane proteins.
- Structural characterisation of nm scale fibres and hydro gels.
