Post Doctoral researcher profiles

Julie Rannesjulie

For the last one-and-a-half years I have been working at the MIB as a post doctoral research associate in Professor Nicholas J. Turner’s group. I came to the MIB after completing my PhD in Denmark (Copenhagen, 2008) having received an international postdoc scholarship from the “Novo Nordisk Research and Training Programme” to come to Manchester. The project was to study the enzyme galactose oxidase which is one focus for the group and gave me a good opportunity to go abroad and gain new knowledge. While I have been here, I have identified several new variants of galactose oxidase by directed evolution methods and applied these variants to develop a technique to label different glycans and glycoproteins. It has been a very interesting project and I have enjoyed staying in Manchester. I have learned various new techniques in disciplines different from my background in Chemical Biology and have met a lot of talented and helpful people. In one month I will return to Denmark to continue the project at Novo Nordisk for 3 months. Novo Nordisk is a biopharmaceutical company with focus on protein-based drugs and one of the major producers of insulin products for diabetes. All in all this has been great experience coming to Manchester and working at the MIB as a post doctoral research associate.
